Ascension Parish is planning a Recycle Day for Christmas Trees!

When: Saturday, January 14, 2012

Time: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Where: Lamar Dixon Expo Center

This recycling event is for Ascension Parish Residents only so Please bring a valid ID.

Please bring your trees clean of any and all ornaments, tinsel, etc.

It’s Hurricane Season in South Louisiana

It’s June 1, 2011! You know what that means in South Louisiana…the official start of Hurricane Season. Our 5th season of the year.

Let’s start gathering our supplies so that we will be ready to either leave at a moments notice or ride out the days of no electricity…

Important papers to put in a waterproof container and take with you if you have to evacuate:

Driver’s License or Personal Identification
Birth certificate
Marriage certificate
Insurance information (Health/Home/Car)
Recent tax returns
Stocks, bonds and deeds
Proof of residence (deed/mortgage/lease)
Wills

Start putting together a family emergency kit. This will be something that will either help you ride out the days of no electricity:

Keep at least 3 gallons of water per person. If you have an extra freezer, we like to fill our milk jugs and freeze them. This will help keep your freezer cool and also act as extra water when it thaws.
Make sure you have a NON-ELECTRIC can opener! This caught me off guard one year! I had plenty of can food but forgot about having to open it with no electricity.
Another thing I failed to think of one year… Paper towels and toilet paper! If electricity is out for a while, it may be hard to get to the stores.
Don’t forget the babies! Diapers, wipes, formula, baby food
Don’t forget your pets! Make sure you have plenty of extra water for them and food as well.
Gather all your medications. You may be able to get extra refills on some of these so that you don’t run out.
FOOD! Gather high energy foods like peanut butter, crackers, nuts, etc. Try to avoid overprocessed, high sugar foods.

These are just a few of the things that may slip your mind when scrambling to get prepared. This year, lets all vow to do as much preparation as possible. Get one of the plastic containers and store your things in there. Just in case.

2011 Louisiana Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday

Ok folks. June 1 is just around the corner. You know what that means…Hurricane Season.

Louisiana Department of Revenue has provided for a STATE TAX FREE WEEKEND this Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29. Now is the time to stock up on Hurricane Preparedness supplies and items.

Just a few of the items available for exemption of state taxes are:

batteries
cell phone batteries
generators
tarps/plastic sheeting

Tax free purchases are authorized on the first $1,500 of sales price.

Do you Recycle?

Most people here do not recycle because we do not have curbside recycle service. There is a way to recycle but it takes a little bit of effort. You can collect your recyclable materials and drop them off at the Ascension Parish Recycling Center located at 42077 ChurchPoint Road.

OR… You can contact Cajun Recycling for curbside service! The service the area about once a week for approximately $11.00 a month! With gas being $4.00/gallon you will save that $11.00 quickly depending on where you live! Get together with your HOA representative and sign up your neighborhood for a discount!

Let’s all do our part to preserve this great place we live and make Mother Earth smile at the same time!

Corks N Canvas :: Baton Rouge

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending a Friday evening at Corks and Canvas on Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge with friends. I chose a Mardi Gras themed Fleur-de-lis class. Of course I chose a three hour class for my first painting experience instead of one of the simpler two hour classes! I was really more excited about hanging out with my friends and drinking lots of wine! The evening started off pretty anxiously for me. You see, I am a perfectionist. 5 minutes into the class I was super stressed! I am not artistic and was terribly overwhelmed. ::sip wine:: ::deep breath:: I relaxed a little and decided that I was giving this way to much thought! The instructors were beyond amazing! They walked us through each step giving us ample time to complete that section before moving forward. I did fall behind a couple of times but had plenty of time at the end to catch up and finish my painting. After each section was shown to us, the instructors turned on some music and walked around helping out with painting and more importantly, moral support! Fast forward three fantastic, fun three hours…. I had a wonderful time! That glass of wine I poured at the beginning; It still had wine in it. I was so involved in my painting, I forgot to enjoy my wine! I truly have NO artistic abilities and had a blast. I highly recommend taking a night with daughters, friends or co-workers to have some fun at Corks N Canvas in Baton Rouge.

Neighbors in Galvez need help rescuing a dog

**UPDATE** The dog has been rescued!

This story aired on the news last night.

I am saddened by what seems to be the lack of support from authorities in our Parish.

Seems that there is a dog stuck in the drainage system in Norwood Lakes. He was there last week while we had those days of below freezing temperatures. The neighbors have been feeding him and have asked for assistance in rescuing him. They were given a pole with a loop at the end… Doesn’t make much sense to me. If any of you know anyone that can help, please, please go out and see what you can do. This poor animal needs our help. I understand that he has now become very quiet and is not eating. The clock is ticking for this helpless creature.

Looking For An Awesome Orthodontist In Prairieville, Baton Rouge Or Denham Springs?

Dr. Vance Misuraca is the answer. I have two children going through Orthodontic Treatment with him right now. My oldest is on her third round of braces. I truly believe that since we found Dr. Misuraca, this will be our last time.

My youngest is very nervous and on a scale of 1-5 has a pain tolerance of 0. She has been in treatment with Dr. Misuraca for six months now. They are expanding her palate. OUCH! When they were installing her appliance the staff was so accommodating to her. They knew that she was uncomfortable and really took their time and explained every single process as they proceeded. After that visit, we received a hand written note in the mail from them. They wrote her a little note of encouragement! I was blown away at the thoughtfulness of that gesture.

A few weeks ago we were there again and plans got changed. She has to have another expander placed to move her palate some more. There was a lot of work involved in her mouth that day. Some of it was very uncomfortable for her. The next day she received ANOTHER hand written note of encouragement! WOW!

I personally can attest to the fact that Dr. Misuraca and his staff truly care about their patients. They have always taken all the time needed to make my children feel comfortable and the fact that they are taking the time to write notes of encouragement to the children that are less that thrilled to be there says a lot about their character.
